  Division of Arts

Welcome!

The Division of Arts is the largest academic Division within Murdoch University. It has 8,000 undergraduate students, 460 research students, 290 staff and an unusually diverse range of disciplines from traditional arts through to information technology, education, law and politics to the Murdoch Business School and the Kulbardi Aboriginal Centre. The Division is also home to a total of 10 research centres/institutes.

We provide a flexible degree structure that allows students to design the degree they need for their future. Students can complete more than one Major of study, providing graduates with broad expertise that equips them to adapt to the rapidly changing global environment. Some of our programs are offered in South-East Asia, where Murdoch University is very highly regarded. We are proud of the employability of our graduates, and our alumni are now occupying senior positions in the private and public sector in Australia and overseas.

Staff in the Division are acknowledged for teaching that combines academic rigour with practical applications. Our staff are also active in research and consulting. The Asia Research Centre has won an international reputation for its research and publications on the political, social and economic trends in contemporary Asia. Key projects recently include analysis of telecommunications, reverse migration, governance and capacity building in the Asian region. Our Centre for Labour Market Research, a collaborative venture of all four public universities in Western Australia, has recently undertaken major projects on annual and sick leave provisions made by employers, and an analysis of the implications of an aging population on public sector recruitment.

The Division of Arts has significant involvement in serving the wider community and, through SCALES (Southern Communities Advocacy, Legal and Education Service), our School of Law has led the way in establishing law clinics that provide an opportunity for students to apply their knowledge to real community problems in Australia.
